Discovering My Heritage :)

Hello! I just joined this tribe in hopes of finding out more about my italian heritage. A few yrs ago i inherited a box of pictures & other memorabilia from my italian-side of the family. The past yr i have been typing up my great uncles journals on the accounts of world war II; about 100 pgs so far. I found these writings telling exact locations, detailed daily accounts, & a very emotional side to the experience of war. It is such great story of an italian-american fighting in his mother’s country. My great uncle was a paratrooper and his experiences included working alongside the canadian special forces, being a soul survivor in an ambush with an italian family taking him in & hiding him, the account of the bombing of the monastery where the last supper resided, the sadness of being a soldier during christmas time, and even a little bob hope entertainment. As i am still in the process of typing all these journals out i have started to try to make sense of the photos that i inherited. Unfortunately my italian is limited to tourist/travel.

I would appreciate any help with translations. The following is what i have typed out from a photo of a gravestone. I was able to make out that bernardino pozzi was decorated with the silver metal and died in combat during world war I at lagazuoi piccolo. i would greatly appreciate a complete translation.

Sincerely & many thanks in advance,
natalie

BERNARDINO POZZI
VOLONTARIO BERSAGLIERE
DECORATO CON MEDAGLIA D’ARGENTO
PERCHE COLPITO DA PALLA NEMICA
NEL TRAVERSARE UNA ZONA VIOLENTEMENTE BATTUTA
NON SI COMMOSSE NON PIEGO NE SOSTO
MA RAGGIUNSE IL COMANDO
CADENDO COME L’EROE MARATONESE
NEL CONSEGNARE L’ORDINE RICEVUTO
------------
MASSA MARITTIMA 18, SETTEMBRE 1887
LAGAZUOI PICCOLO OTTOBRE 1915

An almost literal translation, feel free to ask any question:

    BERNARDINO POZZI
VOLUNTARILY ENROLLED IN THE BERSAGLIERI CORP (It's an Italian special corp, known for running en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bersaglieri )
    DECORATED WITH A SILVER MEDAL
BECAUSE HE WAS HIT BY ENEMY'S FIRE (literally, by an enemy bullet)
WHILE HE WAS PASSING THROUGH AN AREA INVOLVED IN HEAVY COMBAT
HE WASN'T AFRAID, HE DIDN'T GAVE UP AND DIDN'T STOPPED
    BUT HE REACHED THE COMMAND
FALLING LIKE THE HERO OF MARATHON (ALLUSION TO PHIDIPPIDES www.lakepowell.net/marathon.html)
WHILE DELIVERING THE ORDER HE RECEIVED

    Ciao Natalie!
For first a sort of traslation: (my English is not so good and the language is old)

    POZZI BERNARDINO
VOLUNTEER BERSAGLIERE (a kind of military corp)
    DECORATE WITH SILVER MEDAL
    WHY STRIKED FROM ENEMY'S BALL
    IN CROSSING A DANGEROUS AREA
NOT MOVED NOT BENDED AND NOT STOPED
    BUT ARRIVED IN THE COMMAND
    FALLING LIKE MARATHON HERO
    DELIVER IN THE ORDER RECEIVED

    ------------
    MASSA MARITTIMA 18, SETTEMBRE 1887
    LAGAZUOI PICCOLO OTTOBRE 1915
    THE PARENTS AND THE SISTER
    P.P.

Basically he was striked from a enemy bullet but he didn't stop and arrived in the command to delivery the order. The strangest part is that my family is accuatly from Massa Marittima that is a veeeeeeery small and nice midieval town inside the Maremma area of Tuscany!!! I mean Massa is so small that if we don't are relative at least our families had know the other! :)

    Cheers,
    Dario

thanks for the interpretations! extremely generous & helpful. i guess the last line is just stating that he was survived by his parents & sister. do you know what P.P. means? ... could be a cousin or even a brother to my great grandmother. the only thing i really know for sure is her name ida pozzi & she was born in italy, and from the majority of the pictures 95% sure it was massa marittima. & some of the pics are as recent as the late 1960s, so most likely i still have family residing there.

if you get a chance i wonder if you could tell me anything about a military picture that is in my photo album on my profile.

dragolar pretty cool... we could be related or our families could have been neighbors a little over a century ago... it's a small world afterall :)

thanks so much for your help!
      natalie
